Is Sedation Dentistry Right for Me?

Sedation dentistry isn’t always ideal for everyone. During a consultation, we will collect your medical history and any medications you’re taking to make sure there will not be any interactions with the prescribed sedation medication (typically Halcion or Valium). We usually recommend oral conscious sedation for patients who:
- Feel mild to moderately anxious or fearful about visiting the dental office.
- Have a strong gag reflex that makes dental work difficult to receive.
- Experience discomfort or have difficulty sitting for dental visits.
- Require long or extensive treatment.
- Need more than one treatment in a single appointment.
How Does Oral Conscious Sedation Work?

Oral sedation is easy to administer but can truly transform your experience at the dental office. Typically in the form of a single pill, you will take the sedation about an hour before your scheduled appointment time to allow the effects to fully kick in. Because of this, you will need to plan for a trusted friend or family member to drop you off and pick you up from our office. Additionally, the effects of the sedation can linger for up to eight to 12 hours, so you will want to take the remainder of the day after your appointment off of work to give yourself time to rest and the medication to work its way through your system.
